Scanning

We offer two scanning options:
  • Film Scans- an Imacon is used to provide 16-bit, high resolution scans from film up to 4x5 including Polaroid Type 55. File sizes range from approximately 120 mg for an RGB scan from 35mm film, to 320 mg from a color 4x5 transparency or negative.
  • Art Reproduction- we provide BetterLight scanning for two and three dimensional artwork. BetterLight is the preferred scanning solution for museums and institutions worldwide. The 16-bit image files vary in size up to approximately 450 mg. This service is available in-studio or on location. Call or email us for details.
Unless instructed otherwise we produce the scan equivalent of a Raw image file. A Raw scan preserves as much tonal range, detail, and textural information as possible. Typically a Raw scan will need some density and contrast adjustment to optimize the image to a desired paper and ink combination. This approach, combined with 16-bit data, provides as much image editing flexibility as possible. Please contact us for more information about this approach or to discuss your specifications.

We handle your film originals with care but, inevitably, high resolution film scans reveal dust, scratches, and abrasions that may not be visible to the eye or revealed in a wet darkroom print. We can provide "dust busting"  or more extensive retouching on request. We charge $90.00 an hour for Photoshop time, billable in quarter hour increments.

Imacon scans, regardless of file size, are $50.00 each. BetterLight scans are $125.00 each. Discounts are available; let us know how many scans are needed and we will quote a price. Image files are delivered on CD/DVD unless other arrangements are made. We charge $20.00 to prepare and burn a disk. An 8.5x11 inch inkjet proof print from a scan, on the paper of your choice, is available for $30.00 (also discounted based on volume).

Printing

We offer three inkjet printing options on a variety of papers and other media (click the FAQ link to review our printing stock) up to 44 inches wide:
  • Cone Color inks for neutral grayscale and color printing on matt papers.
  • Cone Piezography K7 Sepia ink for printing on matt papers.
  • HP Vivera inks for neutral grayscale and color printing on matt, baryta, and RC (glossy and lustre, for example) inkjet papers.

What distinguishes our printing is a complete commitment to color management. We use third party RIP's to manage printers (ColorBurst and Bowhaus), and X-Rite professional spectrophotometers and Monaco Profiler Platinum to author custom profiles and printing environments. The true test of color management is the ability to produce a neutral grayscale print from a full color ink set. Email us for a sample print.

Publishing

We leverage digital technology to give artists new opportunities for traditional offset printing, hand pulled artist books, and professional quality print on demand publication:
  • Traditional offset printing- K2 Press provides complete scanning, image processing, and match proof services for offset printing. We can provide RGB files for conversion or soft proofed CMYK files matched to a given press, ink, and paper. There are two advantages to our approach: the artist has complete creative control over the creation of a book's master files, and those files remain the property of the artist (and can be repurposed for exhibition, portfolio, and edition printing, web sites, and more). The savings with this approach is substantial. Our traditional prepress projects include Bill Wittliff's Lonesome Dove, the most successful publication in the the history of the University of Texas Press.
  • Artist books- Handmade editioned artist books have an impressive aesthetic history. K2 Press provides consultation, complete prepress service, and project management.
  • Print on demand- There are two barriers to success with current POD services; one with the printers, the other with artists and photographers. The printers--who typically sub-contract their printing--cannot offer professional color management. Artists, enthralled with being a publisher, often overlook their lack of design and typographic skills. K2 Press has engineered a POD publishing service that addresses both issues.

Digital Negatives for Alternative Processes

In collaboration with Mark Nelson we offer the Precision Digital Negative process for printing images on plastic for contact printing. This process can be calibrated to platinum/palladium, gum bichromate, cyanotype, silver gelatin, and more. Click on the Examples link for more information or contact us for details. This option requires consultation and a preliminary calibration process for best results.

K2 Press DigiChrome

If you are familiar with the unique visual impact of Cibachrome/Ilfochrome® prints--exceptionally high gloss polyester base and saturated azo dyes--K2 Press offers an inkjet alternative. The advantage of DigiChrome lies in the ability to control image density and contrast in Photoshop, thus solving the two prickly issues associated with the wet darkroom process. Call for more information or to request a sample print.
